My Name is Don Sullivan; I am Pastor of the Kona Seventh-day Adventist Church.
We Americans are thankful for our freedom and enjoy it. We want personal individual freedom
too. When one person's freedom hurts another person's freedom, do we not have to draw a
line some place.
My wife's Uncle Dick exercised his freedom to smoke even though the United States Surgeon
General says that smoking may be damaging to your health. Happily, he stopped smoking
before he died but the damage had been done and his life was cut short. He was the youngest
and the only one of eleven children who chose to smoke. His next older sibling is my mother-
in-law who will be 91 in July and she just had a visit from her sister who is 95. Now Uncle
Dick's wife, Aunt Doris exercised her freedom to NOT smoke but today she is suffering from
emphysema because of his smoking and she having had to breathe his secondary smoke. His
freedom hurt her freedom and was inconsiderate of her even though he loved her.
Smoking is damaging health wise to the smoker who exercises his freedom to smoke but
his/her secondary smoke is damaging health wise to those who have exercised their freedom
not to smoke but have had to breathe that secondary smoke. When one's freedom hurts
another person's freedom, a line has to be drawn.
Let's have smoke free workplaces to safe guard the health of other workers who have chosen
not to smoke and also a smoke free place fpr the persons t ey erve such as the customers.
The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 3:16,17-"Do you not know that you are the temple of
God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will
destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are." Let's not be guilty of
defiling that which pertains to God which is our bodies and the bodies of others.
