As a county dozen and a martled professbn2d who is health consdous, I would attend more
concerts and fundlons at focal nightclubs, if bill 260 were passed, as would many of my friend and
uarawaa«n colleagues. My husband, Staff Sgt. Leonard Arlcheta, who served with the 291+r Hawaii Air
National overseas during Operation Enduring Freedom, wilt rroi Mend dances or concerts in local
nightclubs and bars due to the heavy smoke. if is sad to limtt our professional community fran
participating in live entertainment evert because of second-hand smoke. We are young aduts,
raising families and we won't expose ourselves to this harmful environment.
Secondhand smoke involuntarily inhaled by norlsmok~s from other people's cigarettes Is
classified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a known human (Group A} carcinogen,
responsible for approximatery 3,000 lung cancer deaths annually in U.S. nonsmokers. if a public
building whh asbestos, such as a stand-alotle bar, were dosed so this carcirx>Ben is removed;
why would we support a vrort( enviralment Mat forces the staff to breath arather (Group A)
carcinogen?
Again, for Mls reason, we would ask you, the Councl members, fo pass bill no. 260 as written. I
ask you not to revise tills hilt and to allow ail of the citizers of our county to enjoy all public places,
smoke-fr6e. So many of our citizens woukf take pleasure in the opportuntty to dine, dance, and
bowl in a smoke-free environment. Why limit these public places to those who smoke? Why not
allow families, single people, and couples Me opportunity to enjoy our entertainment and diMng
establishments without compromising Meir health.
