Tha American Lung Assodatlon of Hawaii apprscats the opportunity to submit written testimony on the beneflta of Bill 260, Dreft B whk~t offers protection for all workers and patrons from the atrect of '°~i0m environmental tobacco smola (ETS) and hopes the County Coundl a''"'"0 paesw this bill. Society is changing quickly. We know that tobacco smoke causes terrible disease, Including lung cancer, respiratory Illnesses, heart dlseasa, and asthma. Nobody should haw to breathe tobacco smoke to hold a Job, end that's the main reason for smoke/ree workplace laglsletlon. MY friend Fred Volgelkesang was a nonsmoker whose family history did not include lung digaq. (recall Fred mentioning how his partner would puff away on his dgarette throughout the day regardless of Frod's complaint. Years later Fred was diagnosed with lung cancer and on February 12, 2003, Fred passed away, leaving his family (e daughter, son, and wife), business, and many friends. The American Lung Assocatlon of Hawaii would like to see workers Ilke Fred protested and this bill provides the protection for workers. Secondhand smoke hertns the health and reduces the produdlvity of nonsmokent. 3moking-cautsci productivity losses and annual health care kwsts in Hawaii amount to $526 million a year (Campe~n for tiYMn You Can't Tobaorzo Fns ICkla, 200. Business ov?mers an often held Ilabh if their employees develop diseases or injuries, And workers exposed to NotMn sHkis secondhand smoke on the Job are 3496 more likely to get lung cancer Matter's (Fontham, et al. The Big Island has Heady 45,839 people who have Tung enter, emphysema, chronic broneMitls, andlor asthma and ET3 has negative effects when expostd. ETti is not only dangerous to everyone's health, but also simply a nuisance to many nonsmokers and even smokers, dw to the eye and nose irrHatfon and tM strong furnee and smell due mainry to ter. This bill treats all workere' health (induding bar, resteurenk and bowNng alley workere) equely. ALL work~re will have a safe, heaftl?y, amokefree workplace. Np workers will be discriminated against by having t4 breathe tobacco smoke at work. "Smokers ere still welcome everywMn. It's just the smoke that's noY (as Joseph W.
