Re: Bill No. 260--Relating to Smoke-Free Indoor Workplaces
Aloha! Thank you for your continued support of the equal protection of all
workers' health, no matter where they work. Our County needs the current
smoke-free workplace bill (Draft 6) to pass. To me, it is very simple.
Employees (no matter where they work) have been protected from Asbestos
(which is a Class A Carcinogen) for several years now. Second-hand smoke is
also a Class A Carcinogen. Therefore, shouldn't ALL employees (no matter
where they work) be protected from ALL Class A carcinogens? I don't think
bar workers appreciate the fact they may not be considered equal to other
workers when it comes to the protection of their health. If our County
passes this bill for ALL workplaces, people with disabilities will no longer
be discriminated against and smokers would still be welcome everywhere.
It's just their smoke that would not.
If there are possible financial and economic concerns, I think it might pale
to the possibility of civil rights lawsuits and the medical bills and
increased premiums that could come about from workers that could claim
discrimination due to being exposed to cigarette smoke.
