It has been suggested that all commercial refuse be trucked to Hilo by the commercial companies. This option is not viable and will not be supported by any of the West Hawaii Refuse Haulers. We feel that it is the County's responsibility to provide West Hawaii with either a landfill or a staging area where the cotmercial haulers could stage the refuse to then be transported to Hilo by County trucks, In the best interests of our community and the people and bubinesses that we are contracted to provide service to, we propose the following: Option I. In the event of Puuanahulu Landfill closing, our first option would be to use any portion ofthe current landfill still under County control, to use as a staging area, This location would have the availability of the weigh station and the advantage of not interrupting any schedules. Option II. The old Kealakehe Landfill, with exact location to be determined by you. Portable scales could be used, or the trucks could use West ~R g U 1997 04i30i97 15 24 KONR RENT RLL (808) 329-4849 P. 82 MII Hawaii Concrete/Allied Aggregate scales, and subtract the cost from the tipping or landfill fee. Or landfill fees could bo determined by volume. Option III. Utilizing any empty cells at the Kealakehe Sewage Treatment Plant, with tipping fees determined as above. In this regard, we are united in our commitment to work with the County to resolve this crisis, We strongly urge the County to keep us informed of any and al] developments pertaining to this issue so that any problems that may arise can be minimized.
