Dear Chairperson Yagong:
BACKGROUND
The existing building at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald site has undergone an extensive
interior and exterior renovation over the past year. As part of that renovation the
Owner has developed an adjacent vacant lot on Kinoole Street into parking for
employees. This renovation opens the previous parking lot adjacent to the building
entirely for customers. As part of the renovation a landscaping plan was developed
that has enhanced the appearance of both parcels. In addition to the landscaping
and parking the Owner has indicated a desire to more clearly identify the business
to traffic on Kinoole Street, aone-way street.
CODE REQUIREMENT
The proposed sign will sit back of the road right-of--way and between the two
parking lots. The property is zoned commercial thus allowing a 32 square foot sign
face on the property. The sign will be positioned perpendicular to Kinoole Street to
make it visible for vehicular traffic on the street.

PROPOSED SIGN
The sign will be constructed of plaster finish with detailing and color to match the
new finish on the building walls. The lettering on the sign has been taken from the
banner of the newspaper and will be proportioeately spaced on the sign face to
match the front page of the newspaper. The lettering w71 be recessed in the sign
face 1" and in a contrasting coMr to provide a snbtie but easily recognizable finished
appearance. The concrete base of the sign will also be finished in the same color as
the concrete lower walls of the building. It will raise the sign face approximately
1'-6" above the ground. The landscape plan includes tow ground cover that will
virtually conceal the concrete base as it matures.
JUSTIFICATION FOR VARIANCE
The actual sign face meets the code requirement of 32 square feet. Its overall
dimensions are 8'-0" bog and 4'-0" tall. The proportions of the sign are designed to
be compatible with the proportions of the logo and lettering. Making the sign face
smager will decrease the size of the lettering to the extent that the lettering will be
difficult to read from vehicles on Kinoole Street.
