Dear Chairnan Arakaki and CouncIl Members:
1 write in support of the application by Ms. Margarita Hopkins for appointment to the County
Council scat representing Council District 2 that is being vacated due to the resignation of Ms.
Leithead= Todd. Please note that this letter is sent on a personal basis and not in my capacity as
I?nergy Coordinator for Hawaii Count}.
~s a co-warker of Ms. Hopkins (I~iDi) for more than ten years in the Deparmtent of Research
& Development, 1 am very familiar with her capabilities and would like to share me insights
with the Council. Throughout this period, Dilli has always exhibited the strongest of work
ethics and dedication to the attainment of her objectives in her area of espertisc, the
agricultural sector that is so important to the future of the Big Island. She has a deep
knowledge of the academic, economic and day-to-da} production aspects of the mane
businesses involved in our agricultural sector and works vein effectively with all the
associations and community members that comprise this major industrc.
On any day, DIDi can be found working with staff from the Universitc nn esoteric research
aspects, discussing silmificant projects with local agricultural companies, assisting in the
marketing of Hawaii products on a national and international basis, as well as dedicating much
of her time on a one-to-one basis with small farmers in need of her advice and assistance. She
has an unrivalled knowledge of how County government works and how to collaborate
effectvely with State and h'ederal agencies. She has also shown during her tenure as Director
of R&D, that she can be a creative and effective manager.
lliDi's experience, knowledge of government, dedication to the betterment of Hawaii and her
perseverance in achieving important objectives arc all very important attributes that make her
eminently quali&ed to serve on the Hawaii CountS~ Council, especially when combined with her
ability to relate to the diverse individuals of our community and ohana on the Big Island.
I urge the County Council to consider Ms. Hopkins' application favorably so as not to forego
this opportunity to put her talents and experience to work for the betterment of District 2 and
all our island residents.
