Re: Bill No. I33, Crosswalk Near Central Kona Unian Church
Dear Coundlperson Reynolds:.
I serve as one of the Elders for Central Kona Union Church, whose
members and visitors are frequent users of the crosswalk in question. Over the
past year, we consulted with our own expert and worked with the Kona Traffic
Safety Committee to determine how we can eliminate the safety hazards that the
eJ~ rent, mid-block crosswalk and increased traffic presents to ail users.
All agree that the relocation of the crosswalk is only one part of the
solution. The other factors that present safety risks are traffic speed and tl~e
absence of a distinctive warning Ilght.
In order to be responsive to the issue, the church has been exploriny
means t0 reduce crosswalk use. For example, just last month, the church
finalized the purchase of a parcel immediately makai of the church sanchtary
building that can serve as a parking lot. At the same time, the church has
explored the shared use of the public library's parking lot.
1 would ask that the County Council defer aetton on thtc measure fQr 30 days
during which time the church can present a formal position statement and plan
of action on this matter. Thank you very much.
Yours uly, 2n .3
