Home My WebLink AboutCOM 0351.001 2002-2004 Harmony Begins Within zeeewcr, i ln~- ~-b ~ lv In the Spirit of Aloha, oate__..._~.-.- r~nfy Council n- H ~ i' ry t•- Three years ago the Domestic Harmony Awareness poster contest was undertaken by the Bay Clinic Healthy intentions Program and Ginny Aste along with *PlanetPuna* the Aloha Planet and myself. This was done to give students a place to express feelings that many shared about domestic harmony and domestic violence. From the beginning the contest was a success with up to 350 entries and inspired some great art which has since been shown in these locations: Congressman Case's office in Washington, D.C, Mayor Kim's office, County Council, many other county offices, COH Prosecutor, Domestic Violence annual vigil, Bay Clinics, Prince Kuhio Mall, Make a Difference Day celebration in Kea'au and other venues. A set was delivered to Governor Lingle and Lt. Gov. Aiona and numerous state legislators when 1 was on Oahu for the opening of the 2003 legislature on behalf of the Committee on the Status of Women. They have consistently evoked people's comments and appreciation. Many posters are online on www planetpuna com/Poster Contest httn to maintain and expand the virtual presence of this art. Our theme'Harmony Begins Within' shares with the audiences that each of us IS empowered to'make a difference', to have a beneficial influence on the world around us, that we are agents of change for a better life and world. Last year through *PlanetPuna* a proclamation about this important topic was created; part of which follows: Whereas, *PlanetPuna* recognizes that domestic harmony must be addressed through education, public awareness, the commitment and concerted efforts of [he public and private sectors, and entertainment; (See complete proclamation below) All these factors were brought into play as [his proclamation was presented to a November 10, 2002 concert, 'Harmony Begins Within', with halau, local musicians, veterans, and representatives from agencies in our community, including drug rehabilitation centers, educators, and government officials [o celebrate domestic harmony awareness. We would like to expand our contest, concert and outreach programs. We are seeking gifts/contributions to cover the costs of creating these worthwhile events; covering gifts for the winners, printing costs, sound technician, performer's meals, bumper stickers, website, transportation expenses, and so on. Date, Healthy Intentions Bay Clinic, Hilo, HI FOR IlVIMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: tinny Aste 965-9869 1-1-1 Domestic Harmony Posters Requested As part of a month long effort to promote domestic harmony, students between gades 7 to 12 are invited to submit poster entries to illustrate happy families or to show what families look like when there is abusive and violent behavior happening in the home. The poster contest is sponsored by Healthy Intentions, a project of Bay Clinic, and *PlanetPuua* the Aloha Planet. The deadline to submit poster entries is Monday, November 3, 2003. Artists may submit posters in mixed media, crayon, pastel, pen, watercolor and tempera. Posters must be within 17 x 24 inches and students may work with a teacher, church group leader, parent, or bring in single entries to any Bay Clinic location, Hilo, Kea'au, Pahoa or Ka'u. -more- Posters 2-2-2 All contest entries must include name, address, school grade and telephone number of the artist. For pickup of poster entries, call tinny Aste, Coordinator, at 965- 9869. This is the third yeaz Healthy Intentions and *PlanetPuna* have sponsored the poster competition. Entries in 2002, totaled 350 and 40 prizes were awarded at "Make a Difference Day," in Kea'au. Prizes included gift certificates, baskets and CDs. A special awazd was given to Officer Anne Mejia, Hawaii Police Department Domestic Violence Unit, for her outstanding work toward reducing domestic violence and promoting harmony in the family. "The poster contest is designed to promote strong, positive visions of happy families and it helps to draw attention to prevention efforts," said Aste. "Calling attention to abusive and violent behavior is important, yet we need to honor families who keep the kindness and aloha flowing yeaz after year, even in the face of the stress of raising children, changing jobs and other challenging situations," stated Paradise Newland, *PlanetPuna* spokesperson. To participate in the cornest, younger student artists are asked to draw their impressions of a happy family and to show what they think a happy, healthy family group looks like. Intermediate and high school age students may depict a happy family or draw what happens to families as a result of angry, violent behavior. -more- Posters 3-3-3 Prizes will be awarded at the Domestic Harmony Awareness concert scheduled for mid-November. Prizes will be donated by individuals and organizations who support the Healthy Intentions and *PlanetPuna" Domestic Harmony Project. Posters will be displayed at the Mayor's office and at various other county and state offices, as well as at Bay Clinic locations. A selection of posters will be sent to Rep. Ed Case in Washington, D.C. for display in his Congressional office. Healthy Intentions was founded as a part of Bay Clinic outreach efforts in the Puna District to eliminate domestic violence and to support families. *Planetl'una" is a coconut/cyber domain established as an outreach project of the Sirius Institute, in the Puna District.
