Aloha,
I was told I had 3 minutes for my testimony, and most of what I want to say will be repeated
by other members of the Ala Loop Community Association, or ourAttorneys, so I'll focus on just a
couple of points.
I feel that our Attorney's letter to Corporation Counsel of 8/17/03 outlines quite clearly, the
county statutes which don't allow an operation such as Waters of Life to operate in an
Agriculturally zoned property such as the one in question. The denial of a special permit for the
Jehovah's Witnesses Church directly across from our 28 acre Certified Nursery by the Planning
Commission in 1995 best exemplifies enforcement of the codes.
My primary concerns for the health and safety of the children of WOL had been addressed
in letters to Chairman Arakaki, and at the recent meeting with Mayor Kim, his Dept. Heads and
our Community Association.
However, as a Certified Nurseryman for 10 years, I'm particularly concerned about
pesticides. My questions would be, was any disclosure made by the seller, Sunshine Farms to
the WOL about pesticide use, storage, and possible residue? And now that WOL is bringing
children onto the property on a regular basis for their day long field trips, have they contracted
anyone to test the property for pesticide residue?
We also bring in semi-trucks with loads of gravel, concrete and refrigerated containers on a
regular basis in the operation of our farm. 1 know other farms on our street also contract truckers
as well. I'm also very concerned about the risk of injury to the children by the transportation of
materials and heavy equipment on our narrow roadway.
