We try not to venture downtown unless running a really important ; errand as the traffic problems are so intense and very frustrating. ~ On Jan. the 7~' I went to ask some questions of ~ several of our state officials. Needless to say I was I ~ ~ not able to get close to the meeting as the folks of Kona that care and take an active interest in our traffic problems, were already there. I would like these questions answered by those who should know. Question to Rodney Haraga State transportation Director: As the amount of Auto dealers and rental car companies increase their stock, what is being done, if anything to control the amount of vehicles here on our roads? Is it not possible to have a car removed from this island before bringing another one here? I do not mean removed to our overused landfill. Off the island period. It sounds preposterous I know, however, we need to do something now, today, not more studies or commissions to investigate, then accompanied by smoke and mirrors. comm. ro. ~{ui~. b l Ref. Date i~ta~L-- Mr. Mayor Harry Kim: Aloha Mr. Mayor I would like to say that I still am not sure if you are doing a good job for the folks of West Hawaii however I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. I realize that your hands are tied on many projects here in Kona. Is it not possible to spend more money here on the West Side? On your drive over here were you happy with what you saw on this side? Did you have a look at the condition of the roads that we already have? I should thinks so. In front of the Capt. Cook police and fire station the road is in abominable shape. Would it not be a good idea to have a road inspector personally drive on all of the roads in Kona, take some notes on the immediate repairs that must be done and instruct the departments to do the work and get it done in a timely manner or heads will roll? Public Works Director Bruce McClure; Aloha: Mr. McClure, please tell us what is being done to insure that the heavy rains here on the Big Island will not have the same effect as on Oahu where the raw sewage was washed into the ocean by heavy rains caused by the overflowing of our sewage systems? If we do have a spill and I am sure that it will happen, with all of this mega development ,what plans are in place to keep this potential accident from destroying the pristine waters off our coastline? There have been some forced blackouts lately here in West Hawaii. How are we supposed to power up the new developments or do they get power priority over the residents of Kona? Will all of the fuel needed to create enough power be transported to the Keahole generation plant on the same roads that we are using? How many fuel trucks will it take to supply enough fuel for what we already have? In closing I would like to say a few words about noise and the building of luxury homes in the flight landing path of our airport. Just the dirt that falls from those jets will be enough to spoil the day on the links. The noise alone will be enough to drive anyone away. Are the owners of these new homes going to build sound proof houses with no windows to keep out the incredible noise that these jets will generate? I think not. What kind of infrastructure are they being required to provide? I hope that at least some of the planning folks will take heed and just say NO until we work out the many problems associated with this kind of huge development. Have a nice drive today. Aloha.
