VI. SUlVI1VIARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
An archaeological inventory survey was conducted by two CSH archaeologists in support
of Veriaon Hawai`i's Kona Office Subdivision Project. One site, with three component features
was identified within the 2.82-acre ldt. Site 50-10-28-23,798 consisted of Feature A, a platform
with an adjoining terzace and Features B and C, two modified outcrops. Eacb feature was
documented with photographs and scale drawings; test units were excavated in Features A and
B, and pzo£rles weze made of the two test units. 1Vo additional sites ox features weze observed
during the inventory survey.
This site is considered significant as it "has yielded or is likely to yield, information
important for research on pzehistory of history" under Criterion D o£ "Rules Governing
Procedures for Historic Preservation Review (DLNR 1996:Chap. 275). The three features have
been adequately recorded, but additional data recovery is recommended for Feature A, which
was interpzeted as a Habitation site based on the construction technique and the pzesence of
charcoal and fishbone recovered from a 2.0 m by 1.0 nn test unit placed in the southwest comet
of the platform. Further testing at the feature could confirm the function of the feature as a
Habitation platform, verify that the feature does not contain a human burial, and provide the
opportunity to co}lect additional charcoal for radiocarbon dating.
Subsequent to the data recovery work, a decision for archaeological monitoring at the site
duzirig future constzuction in the area will be made in consultation with khe SHPD. -While the
likelihood of encountering Human remains or othez significant cultuzal deposits is zegarded as
exceedingly low after further testing, if, in the unlikely event such deposits are encountered, all
subsurface work in the immediate vicinity should immediately cease, aad the State Historic
Preservation Division should be promptly notified.
