Nies, Program Associate Re: Marijuana Position Statement The American Lung Association of Hawaii campaigns against smoking in any form including cigarettes and cigars, and any controlled substance such as marijuana, crack cocaine,or crystal methamphetamine because of the increased risk of lung disease. Marijuana is a powerful drug that comes from the leaves, flowering tops, and stems of Cannabis sativa There are over 400 separate chemicals in marijuana -even more when its burned -which produce many different effects on the mind and body, especially the lungs. Marijuana smoke has 50 percent more cancer causing chemicals and tars than tobacco smoke Marijuana smokers usually inhale marijuana smoke deeper and hold it in their lungs longer than cigarette smokers Marijuana users are also more likely than tobacco users to smoke the cigarette to the very end. Both of tnese tendencies enhance and maximize the marijuana user's exposure to tar and other respiratory irritants. One marijuana cigarette can deliver as much tar as a dozen or more cigarettes In addition, a single marijuana cigarette smoked for 15 minutes produces as high a level of carbon monoxide in the blood of the smoker as 10 to 20 tobacco cigarettes smoked during the course of the day.
