Dear Council Chairman Arakaki and Council Members,
Thank you for your kind words and support of our department's efforts to achieve our goals and
objectives as detailed in our Strategic Plan. I appreciated the opportunity to discuss our
budgetary needs and requests before you.
I would like to provide you with an initial response to your inquiries during our budget testimony.
• Volcano Fire Station - FY 2004!05 CIP
An additional $602,000 is budgeted in FY 05-06 CIP for start-up costs and the purchase of
equipment that will equip a new fire station facility for the Volcano community and adjacent
areas. The present Volcano fire station is situated on Federal property with fire protection
services presently provided with Federal funding. Once the County takes over these
services in January 2005, there will be a requirement to fund the purchase of equipment.
Existing fire stations do not require this additional cost due to the transfer of existing
equipment from their present fire station.
• Site Visits -Proposed Fire Administration Complex
Site visits have been scheduled on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at about 12:00 p.m.,
(following our monthly Fire Commission meeting) at five possible locations for our future Fire
Administration complex.
As you will note, the former Sun Sun Lau building has been included in this list. Because
this site had been proposed earlier and continues to be viewed as having potential, it will be
included in a formal evaluation. As with any of the potential sites, all pros and cons will be
identified to support effective and qualified decision making.
