There are several important reasons for the Council to pass Bill 250.
Firs[, state law requires this County to adopt this ordinance.
Second in order to obtain funds, this County promised the federal government that it
would do what this bill does: ensure that sites currently exempted would be connected to
the wastewater system.
Failure to pass this ordinance subjects the county to litigation. It jeopardizes future
funding by the state and federal governments. It could lead the federal government to
demand a return of the tens of millions of dollars provided to the county for wastewater
improvements.
Finally, do you really want your kids swimming in crap? Literally? Cesspools and septic
tanks next to the ocean make no sense. 'they leach into our coastal waters. The State
Land Use Commission recently observed - after a lengthy hearing that sewage
disposed of in injection wells, cesspools, or septic tanks is not adequately regulated to
protect coastal ecosystems and public health.
There is no reason for the Council to drag its feet on this issue any longer.
