SUBJECT: PRESENTATION ON LEED CERTIFICATION FOR THE WEST
HAWAII CIVIC CENTER
The US Green Building Council, a national non-profit organization, has developed a
leading-edge system referred to as LEED, 'Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design', for designing, constructing, operating and certifying the world's greenest
buildings. LEED provides a standard for achieving positive results for the
environment, occupant health and financial return, and will address the expressed
desire of the West Hawaii community to have a sustainable design for the West
Hawaii Civic Center at Kealakehe.
Mr. Bill Brooks, AIA, a partner in the Honolulu architectural firm of Ferraro Choi and
Associates, has kindly offered to give a 30-minute PowerPoint overview of LEED to
the Committee on Public Works and Intergovernmental Relations. Mr. Brooks has
extensive experience with the sustainable design of buildings and is a member of the
design team for the Distributed and Renewable Energy Center currently being built at
the NELHA Gateway along Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway. This facility has been
designed for certification at the Platinum level, highest of the four LEED certification
levels.
We would greatly appreciate an opportunity for Mr. Brooks to provide Committee
members information on LEED certification at the May 4 meeting in Hilo.
