Program Objective
Provide D.A.R.E. curriculum to 5°i Grade core classes 5`h Grade, approximately 4,500 students. Grant
funds to be utilized cover costs associated with training sessions for D.A.R.E. officers, activities and
programs for student participating in the progrun, supplies and equipment for classroom.
Program Highlights
In 2002, the department's D.A.R.E. pro -ram Ih n an a D.A.R.E. Cheerleader squad consisting of students
between the grades of sixth to eight to perform at functions to promote anti-drug and anti -violence concept
of the D.A.R.E. program.
During School Year 2002-03, the D.A.R.E. curricuhmi was provided to 3,200 students, a reduction from
previous years due to cutback in manpower to support manpower shortages in Field Operations.
During the first half of School Year 2003-04, the D.A.R.E. curriculum was provided to 1,750 51b Grade
Students in schools from Hookena, Laupahoehoe and Waimea.
In January 2002, Regional D.A.R.E. Day Programs held in both Hilo and Kona for student participating in
the D.A.R.E. program.
In March 2002, Officers Shaw and Sojot. along, with one teacher participated in the Hawaii D.A.R.E.
Officer's training conference held in Honolulu.
In June 2002, Officer Warren Shaw participated as an instructor in the D.A.R.E. Officer Training program
in Oahu.
In July 2002, the D.A.R.E. Institute for Future Leaders camp was held in Hamakua, for elementary students
making the transition to junior high/middle school.
In July 2002, Officer Shaw and Sojot, along with one teacher and one student participated in the National
D.A.R.E. Training Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
In October 2002, Officer Shaw participated in the Hawaii Rural Health Association Conference in Oahu.
In December 2002, Officer Shaw participated in the D.A.R.E. America Seminar held in Las Vegas, NV.
In February 2003, Regional D.A.R.E. Davi Pro,zrains were held in both Hilo and Kona for students
participating in the D.A.R.E. Program.
In March 2003, Officers Shaw and Royle; Valera. along with the D.A.R.E. Cheerleaders and chaperons
participated in the Hawaii D.A.12.G. Officcr*s :Association Conference held in Kauai.
In December 2003, Officer Shaw participated as an instructor in the D.A.R.E. Officer Training Program in
Oahu, Officers Sojot, Valera and Dayton Tagaca participated as students.
