First of all, do you have an email. address?
Second, thank you for asking my opinion.
I am mostly opposed to growing eucalyptus trees for forestry. I would
prefer that ay lands be used for. diversified agriculture, esp i.f wo get
the irradiation plant. Fruit. t.rePS such as avocado, even peacPt in
higher elevations. if forestry is pursued, I think hard woods would be
better for the economy in the lorry run, and provide more jobs, ie in
furniture and cabinet making. Irnmodiate income from hardwoods isn't a9
pragmatic as wood chips and pulp, but 1 think diversif.i.ed ag Can fill an
immediate need, and hardwoods a longer term need.
I have a much batter idea, however that would boost the economy of the
entire State, and Honokaa in particular - and I have never seen this
idea floated anywhere. Bishop Estate has 30,000 acres (or so) in
Honokaa area. They have no business growing trees, when they have a
mandate to educate Hawaiian people. Preschools and Kindergardens are a
joke - a slap in the face. They have more money than Yale and Harvard
combined. They should build a Stanford of the Pacific on those lands!
Look ar. what Stanford did for Palo Alto and the SF peninsula? All
because one man had a vision in 1896. Look at what a great private
University would do for this State. Initially, lots of construction
jobs. Then housing, etc. They could have enough dorms so that students
from all over the State could afford to attend. Lots of scholarships
and financial aide for students of Hawaiian ancestry. IC would give
local kids a goal, a reason to WANT an education. Lots of high paying,
high tech jobs. Millions in Federal yrenty for research. Doctoral
level courses in Astronomy, Marine Biology, Agriculture, Volcanolgy,
just to name a few, using the unique resources of this island. The list
goes on and on. Growing trees is not what this Ssland, or state needs.
EDUCATION is! JOBS arel Bishop Estate is in a position to do it. call.
It iS what the Princess' will mandates them t0 do. Someone 3ust has to
provide some leadership to get them doing what they should It
certainly hasn't come from the Democrat.i.c leadership in this State. Run
this by Steve Yamashiro, and see what h2 thinks. I think It really
could happen, with the right vision and leadership.
