HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 182 Draft 01 2002-2004 COUNTY OF HAWAII `.::...STATE OF HAW I`I RESOLUTION NO. 1~2 0~ A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING MAY AS NATIONAL DRUG COURT ONTH WHEREAS, the month of May has been declared "National Drug Court Moi h" by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals for the purpose of increasing an a areness of drug courts and their missions on the national, state and local levels; and WHEREAS, drug courts are special courts given the responsibility of handli g cases involving non-violent drug-use offenders through mandatory comprehensive treatme t for substance abuse and intensive judicial supervision; and WHEREAS, statistically, the national drug court program has proven successful in terms of its retention and recidivism rates, overall cost to taxpayers and reducing drug-rela ed crimes; and WHEREAS, since their establishment in 1994, and as a testament to the prog am's effectiveness, drug courts operating nationwide have grown in number from twelve t over a thousand--with over four hundred additional ones currently in the planning stages; a d WHEREAS, the Big Island drug court program, although established in Octo er of 2002 and therefore still in its infancy, has thus far experienced success similar to that expe fenced throughout the nation; and WHEREAS, the judges, prosecutors, probation officers, defense attorneys, tr atment and rehabilitation professionals, law enforcement personnel, researchers and educators, ational and community leaders and others dedicated to the drug court movement should be reco nized and congratulated for the profound impact their contributions are having on our commun ties; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii stands united with the rest of the country in fighting drug abuse in America. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE C UNTY OF HAWAII that it recognizes May as "National Drug Court Month" and supports the fforts of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals in increasing a nationwide awaren ss of drug courts and their missions. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it acknowledge, congratulate and thank Il of the practitioners and participants who have contributed toward making the drug court pr gram a continuing and growing success. BE IT FINALLY RESOL ED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is ins ructed to transmit copies of this resolution t the Honorable Ronald Moon, Chief Justice of th State of Hawaii, the Honorable Karen Fre man-Wilson (retired), Chief Executive Officer of he National Association of Drug Court Profess onals, the Honorable Ronald Ibarra and Greg Na mura, Circuit Court Judges of the Third ircuit, and Mr. Warren Kitaoka, Drug Court Coo inator for the Circuit Court of the Third Circ it.
