Alliance, an islands-wide network of Native Hawaiian amd
Customary I19IICS environmental activists who work to protect cultural rights and our
fragile resources.
alld 001 We are v concerned about efforts by a private investor (Cliftos,
fragile e0YIl00meIIC Inc.) to seek a variance to the Shorelines Management ,Act, with the
goal developuag a nxort area in a ~uecious area of vital and fragile
coastal lands adjacent to Kohanaiki.
This pro sal is counter to ev~ervthing that the County has been atxetn~ting to prevent. This
projtct if allowed to go forty dd,it would be direct defiance of Hawau's comprehensive Ulan,
and it would contribute st~m~candy to the numerous existing p blems fat' Hawaii Island.
O'oma holds archeological treasures including the aacient Ala I~ahakai irail~n addition, this
beach is one of the last publicly accessible coasts in West Hawaii.
The Council would be directly responsible for acting in opposition to the planning document
designed to guide future dove opment and ignonu-

In addition to acounter-intuitive and uunecessary development that could impact valuable ocean
resources, including significant eeononuc investments at the adjacent facility at NEHI.A,
KAHEA is also concerned about the civil ~tocess of hearing this proposal in Hilo. The bill
before you should be heard in Kona, as ihrs project would directly impact the people and
resources of West Hawaii.
Please do the tight thing for our future generations. Vote no on Bill 178.
