My family and I urge you to support community input on the use of the 4400 acres of
County land being considered for pulp eucalyptus timber.
Yulp eucalyptus monoculture is the single most exploitive kind of forestry. Raping the land
and exporting its raw materials for big corporate profit is usually reserved for third world
countries, which is unfortunate in itself. Hawaii is not a third world country. Mayor
Stephen Yamashiro and Mike Wilson, Chair of the BLNR, must stop treating us like one.
Members of our elected County Council must not treat us like one either. Pulp CANNOT be
the only option considered for our County lands.
Mayor Yamashiro unilaterally decided on pulp monoculture eucalyptus forestry for County
lands three years ago. We understand he handpicked the lands, by-passing more valuable
properties makai of the highway or below the Hamakua Ditch. We recall no publicity. We
recall outcry only from Keiko Bonk. Now, thank Heavens, Dominic Yagong has spoken out.
The Council must act to defeat Yamashiro's plan, or it will be forever remembered as the
Council who sold out to big corporate interests and political pressures from the Mayor's
office. PLEASE DO NOT BOW TO THE PRESSURES FROM MAYOR YAMASHIRO.
PLEASE STAND UP TO HIS MANIPULATIONS.
We have many friends all over the Big Island. We do not know one single person who favors
this type of forestry. It gives the least back to our island with the most exploitation. NOT
ONE PERSON that we know in Waimea wants logging trucks through town OR a chipping
factory in Rawaihae OR pulp timber anywhere on our island. A chipping mill and the
incumbent trucking can be heard miles away. Afriend who lived 3 miles from Capital
Chipping recalls many nights when the noise was so loud that he couldn't even sleep.
Mono eucalyptus forestry will ruin our public lands. The southeastern states on the
mainland have learned that the hard way. Please read a book called "Pulping the South" to
learn the sad story, because it will happen here if pulp comes in.
Our touristry business is suffering on the Big Island. Visitors come for the remnants of the
old Hawaiian lifestyle. No tourist Ilies thousands o£ miles to visit pulp plantations. Instead
of pulp we can have diversified agriculture and diversified forests of native trees with
responsible logging for our local building industry and craftspeople. Native forests would
nourish our wildlife. They would attract tourists and local people. We could have parks
which would employ people. There must be many more ideas to explore. It is not necessary
to go for the quick fix. With a little thought and work, we can raise money for the County
AND use our public lands responsibly and with Aloha.
Please support the citizens' right to input on a situation that affects us all greatly. PLEASE
VOTE AGAINST THE OJI PAPER BID.
