Chair, Hawaii County Council
Committee on Public Works &
Intergovernmental Relations
Mr. Safarik and Committee,
On behaYf of Na Leo Pohai, the public policy affiliate of The Outdoor Circle, I
would like to take the opportunity to address the sign variance request by Keith
Unger and Eric von Platen Luder, owners, Alii Gardens Marketplace. This sign
variance request, scheduled for your Tuesday, April 20 meeting, seeks an
increase on size of their signs to 3' x 6'.
Please be aware that Alii Gardens Marketplace is located in a residential area on
Alii Drive with a speed limit of 30 mph. In both directions the signs can be seen
approximately .1 miles -not because of the size of the signs but because of the
curvature of the road in both directions. BECAUSE OF THE CURVATURE OF
THE ROAD, THE SIGNS CAN NOT BE SEEN ANY SOONER NO MATTER
HOW LARGE THEY ARE. THE EXISTING SIGNS ARE VERY VISIBLE AT THE
FIRST POINT THEY CAN BE PHYSICALLY SEEN.
The existing signs appear to be larger than allowed by the present sign cone.
Also note that these large signs are elevated making them very easy to read.
I urge you to deny the sign variance by Mr. Unger and Mr. von Platen Luder.
Sincerely,
4'~5-+~1~,1h,
Lynn Puri
