To whom it may concern,
I am writing to encourage you to pass bi11270 for the purchase and protection of rv
land on our Big Island. This bill is good for our economy as well as the environment and
we need to protect our lands for future generations. Ask yourself if we want to turn
Hawaii into an overbuilt island like Oahu? The main tourist appeal of our island is its
natural beauty and this would be ruined if we do not take immediate action to protect it.
I live in Holualoa and we already have experienced much flooding due to
development in flood zones. This bill would protect watersheds and keep more
development from happening in flood azeas. We do not need to ask for trouble by
building on all available land and ignoring "mother nature". Our earth needs drainage.
We should not be building in drainage azeas! This will only ultimately cost us more
money in the long run as we try to save flooding buildings and dedicate money to helping
replace or repair buildings built in azeas in which they should have never been built to
begin with.
My husband and I moved here from California where the "Open Space Trust" has
secured over 37 miles of continuous land along the northern California coast. I know
how much we island people do not like to have comparisons made to mainland things,
but we should be open minded enough to learn from any good experience, no matter
where it is based. This open space trust has saved much of California from over
development and is truly a step in the right direction. More locally, Maui and Kauai have
also passed similaz bills. All of these forwazd thinking propositions have been a great
success and are supported by well above the majority of residents of these areas. Let's
catch up with the forwazd thinkers, and not let Hawaii be left behind.
The only part of this bill that we ask to be omitted is the added paragraph that
allows for rescinding the money to provide for the use of purchasing land, depending on
the circumstances each yeaz. Please do not give an "out" for this to happen. We need a
STRONG and concise bill that will unequivocally provide for the purchase and
preservation of the land. Any "softening" of this bill reduces its possibility of success.
