Subject: support Bill 270
Hawaii County Council
Aloha Chairman Arakaki:
I want to add my name to the 70% of our Hawaii County voters that support
Bill 270. I believe it appropriate to applaud the Council's visionary endeavors
to be the stewards they are called to be to protect our precious natural
resources. These resources were here before many of us existed and were
revered and nurtured by our Host Culture. Given the unstoppable population
explosion and the recent tension between land developers, Hawaiian cultural
practitioners, and the environmental community, this bill is seen as a huge
support initiative.
As a board officer for Hui Kako'o Aina Ho'o Pulapula ("Let the people flourish
on the land"), we advocate for the 20,000 Native Hawaiians that are on the
wait-list for Hawaiian Homes awards. Keeping these lands and water sources
free from pollution is an on going challenge. Additionally I was a former tri-
chair for the West Hawaii Fisheries Council, a community based organization
that effortlessly continues to strive to keep our shoreline resources free from
abuse and contamination. As you can see these organizations are made up of
our citizenry that cares, nurtures an protects.
Given the background above, I urge the County Council to unanimously pass
Bill 270 out of the Finance Committee to its final passage.
