Aloha!
As residents of Kona Heights we use Nanl Kailua. The increase in traffic,
especially in the number of vehicles which exceed the 25 mile an hour speed
limit, continues to cause concern. While the recently installed 4-way stop at
Kakalina assures reduced speed at that point, many drive fast to and away from
that intersection thereby endangering walkers, children and pets, while at the
same time increasing noise levels for homeowners. We believe that developing
Hienaloli (Old Railroad) Road to Hualalai Road would exponentially increase
Nani Kailua traffic, making it THE preferred thoroughfare for Holualoa residents
going to town, airport or simply north, as well as for the residents of the Ojai and
other developments on Hienaloli Road itself. While the Nani Kona Aina project
would in its own right damage the quality of life of our neighborhood and make
Nani Kailua even more dangerous, the Hienaloli Road development could be
disasterous.
We believe that this project, as so many proposed for Kailua-Kona, could be a
blight rather than a benefit. It should be put on a back burner until the radical,
grave problems of roads, thoroughfares, intersections and overall infrastructure
of and in Kona are carefully studied, addressed and implemented with wisdom
ar±d foresight in aholistic-planning manner. We almost daily experience the toll
of hasty, tax-revenue or other $ motivated development, and at this late stage of
the game ft is essential to stop pushing our town to ruin!
