RE: Bill 237 (Draft 2) Establishes an Operating Budget for the County of Hawaii for
the Fiscal Year July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005
Dear Chairman Arakaki:
The Department of Environmental Management, Solid Waste Division has submitted an
operating budget for the East Hawaii Regional Sort Station as well as a request to establish
Welder positions as part of the Hawaii County Operating Budget. The United Public Workers
would like to submit this testimony in favor of approving the budget for the Sort Station and
Welders, including the funding of the positions identified in the budget request. The positions
are necessary to provide for the management of solid waste, as well as for the repair and
maintenance of transfer stations and equipment.
The United Public Workers urges the Chairman and Council members to approve the
Environmental Management budget request. Hawaii County needs to fund the East Hawaii
Regional Sort Station as one of the first steps in implementing the Integrated Solid Waste
Management Plan.
