I am writing to you in regards to an assignment that was given by our Partidpation in Democracy teacher, Mr. Jeffrey Pike. I found this assignment to be an opportune time to write to you about my concern in Hilo. Ever since I started driving in February 2003, I noticed the poor conditions of Hilo roads. One of the worst roads to travel on is West Kawailani St. lJp until I started driving, I was completely oblivious to how damaged Kawailani St. was. 1 couldnY believe how bumpy and narrow the road had become. I travel on Kawailarri regularly, and each time, I become more upset with driving on this tertide road. R seems as though the road hasn't been paved in years, which is probably true. IYe become extremely disgusted to the pant where I avoid driving on Kawailani if at all possible. Kawailani St. is an important road to all Waiakea residents because we use it to go to school, to the maA, and to work. Even the Waiakea Fire Station uses the road for emergency purposes. If anything, we should be making the road wider and smoother for faster response time and patient security. Not too long ago, a friend of mine got into an acddent with another car because the driver of the other vehide crossed the center line trying to avoid a pothae. Since drivers donY appreaate hitting every bump along the way, nearly everyone drives eRher near the center line or over the center line just to avoid the huge bumps and holes in the road. I really do feel Kawailani St. is overdue of a new paving job. The road and the people of Waiakea district definitely deserve this. The only positive thing about Kawailani St. is the sidewalks and sidewalk speed bumps that protect pedestrians and bike riders from the cars. At least they're safe. However, with the excessive traffic that Hilo town experiences, we need Kawailani St. to be paved so that drivers can go bads to using this road regulady. I'm sure that majority of the public would appredate a paved Kawailani St. Thank you so much for your time and attention to this matter. Sincerely, Ariane Jardine-Namba 1595 Lei Lehua St. Hilo, HI 98720-3342 Comm. No • Z. Ret. To: ~FiMtt 1tMN~ Ref. Dore MAY 1 9~_
