Dear Mr. Arakaki, Chung, Ray, Yagong, Reynolds, Tyler, Santangelo, Leithead-Todd
and Smith:
The more I read, hear and learn of the pending land lease to Oji Paper Co. the less I
like about it. The state and Mayor have been ramming down our throats, but with
constituent input, I am hopeful it is not too late! I am compelled to let you know we of
West Hawaii are not in favor of it.
After having listened and read as much about it as possible, there is no way I can
conclude that it is a good thing for Hamakua, Waimea or the west side, or for taxpayers
in general or anyone's children. The cost in road repair and maintenance, harbor
improvements and usage, poisons and burning, the chipping mill and possible pulp
plant in the future far out weighs any positive benefits the proponents of the plan can
ever come up with. Twenty or more huge logging trucks going round trip from
Hamakua to Kawaihae everyday!!! I shudder to think about it.
55 years is too long to commit to a foreign beneficiary. Most of the money and earnings
will leave the state. The tax breaks, cheap yearly rent and other ambiguities of the
lease favor Oji at the expense of our local residents, the taxpayers and our children.
The people of Hamakua would whole-heartedly embrace something they felt would
increase jobs, provide a future for their kids and better use the now fallow land, but
they have not embraced this project far many gaol reasons.
Please listen to what we are trying to sayl I urge each and everyone of you to
reconsider your stance and do all you can to stop the lease of State or County lands to
Oji Paper Company.
