Dear Dr. Holschuh:
We were very distressed to read in the Tribune Herald that you are withholding your
s~lpport from the Sort Station Facility as proposed by the Department of Environmental
Management.
It has taken years to get a coherent solid waste plan for Hawaii Island....and now it is at
risk. Without the Sort Station, we would revert to the trucking option that would put at
least 50 trucks per day on our highways, cost more, and do nothing to reduce solid
waste or encourage small business development.
Rejecting the Sort Station is against the interests of the Hamakua coast in particular,
where we are limited to the two lane highway for access. The added truck traffic from
waste hauling and eucalyptus logging will have a major impact on public safety.
Changing to an RFP process would cause additional delays of up to one year, and ask
bidders to perform activities that are in competition with each other: removing waste via
the sort station, and hauling/disposing of waste. What incentive would a contractor,
paid by the ton to haul/process waste, have to remove it from the waste stream via
recycling?
Hawaii County is far behind the other counties in our state in percentage of recycling. .
It is time for the County of Hawaii to catch up with the rest of the state and end years of
avoiding the problem.
