My name is Denise Smith and I have been a resident of Hawaiian Paradise Park for ast~~'x
years. I served for the past three years on the Paradise Hui Hanalike Board of Direc~ _ and ,
was one of the original volunteer planners who helped design this plan ~ " -

I feel that the group of people who designed this plan represented a true cross section9f the
residents of Paradise Park . They were not hand picked but were solicited by an adve~semeni~n
the Date Book and came from every possible income category that could be imagined:yTtie r'
thought process that developed this plan was one of open minds and consideration of the needs
and wants of others.
The need for such a plan is evident. We have a area about the approximate size of Hilo with the
potential population at build out of 33,000 people. We all know how difficult it is to try and
retrofit infrastructure into a area which is already inhabited and there is no question about the
population growth of the Park! Even ten years ago, who would have imagined that there would
be the number of homes that there are today in Paradise Park. I believe that now is the time to
plan for the future of this rapidly growing subdivision.
This is not a "build it and they will come" plan. This is a future plan for controlled growth. It is a
plan for providing necessary services based upon the needs of the residents, a plan for developing
a community which is not totally dependent upon the automobile for reaching those services, and
a plan for retaining the rural atmosphere of the Park.
We know that this plan does not please everyone in Paradise Park but I truly believe that some
aspect of it appeals to most people. The "Tree Huggers" may not want a light industrial area but I
bet they would love to have parks and bike trails. The game bird farmers may not want apartment
buildings but I bet they would love to have a feed and grain store within the Park. Young families
may not want a service station near by but I bet they would like to have a school that their
children could walk to as opposed to being bused seven miles away.
This is a plan for the Future whether the Future is next year or 35 years from now. It is a plan
developed by the residents, for the residents and I fully support it.
