When my father came to Hawaii in the ea 14Q0's, as a ~
plant geneticist for the Hawaiian Sugar 1a~t~r's"I;~'tr~r
Association he was, even then, deeply concerned about
preserving the quality of our land. I have inherited his
concern.
For thirty three years I have been a landowner in Waipi`o
Valley, and for the past several years I have followed your
career and thank you for representing us. I do not often
communicate with my legislators because of my isolation and
lack of phone service. However, I read yesterday in the
newspaper that you are withdrawing your support from Bi11
270.
As a current inhabitant of Hawai`i's most sacred valley, I
am vitally-if not obsessively-concerned about the passage
of Bill 270. In my view having 1-2~ of my property tax
dollars go to protecting our `aina cannot come too soon. I
have seen invasions in Waipi`o Valley, of plants, of
humans, and the ravages of mother nature.
In the newspaper, you stated that "90 percent" of people
who have contacted you are against this bill. I cannot
imagine who has contacted you, as everyone I have talked to
are in total support of Bill 270. I and a group of close
friends follow politics, vote in every election, and look
forward to voting on this ballot issue in November.
Although I do not expect you to halt the natural
devastation that has happened to our Valley and Island, my
continued support for you depends on your support for Bill

270. I have faith that you will re-evaluate your position
and give your constituents the simple right to voice their
vote on this issue.
