In as much as an East Hawaii solid waste,sort station becoming
operational within 1=Y 2004-05 is an integral component of the Integrated
So?dd Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) formerly adopted by the Council,
Recycle Hawai i urges restoration of the sort station's staffing, operations,
and expansion funds that were deleted by the County Council on May 19
and appropriating those funds toward placing the necessary sort station
online. Selecting a private contractor to manage and operate the sort
station is a viable and acceptable alternative to the original plan.
A delay in bringing the sort station on line will hasten the imminent closure
of the Hilo landfill and undoubtedly will have a negative impact on resource
management efforts island w
