Subject: Sort Station Facility Funding
Dear Chairman Arakaki and Members of the Council:
1 am writing to express my support for the proposed East Hawaii Regional Solid Waste Sort
Station and Maintenance Facility.
As you are aware, the volume of solid waste that is produced in Hawaii County has been
increasing at an alarming rate, and the availability of storage space in the Hilo Landfill is
rapidly diminishing. The proposed Sort Station is an important element in the life extension
of the Hilo Landfill and a crucial step in the development of a comprehensive, Integrated
Solid Waste Management Plan for Hawaii County.
Delays in the construction of the Sort Station could adversely impact residents as
commercial waste hauling traffic from the East side to the West would increase dramatically
once the Hilo Landfill is closed. Also, Hilo residents will continue to be deprived of a
convenient recycling center.
Please support the proposal of the Department of Environmental Management as expressed
in the May 25, 20041etter from the Mayor to proceed with the first phase of the Sort Station
to be operated under private contract. Restore funding to the plan by appropriating it to the
Miscellaneous Contractual Services account in the Solid Waste Fund.
