_--r-
1 l
r
~ ,
~ec'~ ~
Apri129, 1997 ~F~3 0 ~ 0
~ A
Honorable James Arakaki, Chairman
and Council Members
Hawaii County Council
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, HI 96720
Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Member:
I represent the owners of The Historic Kress Building and would like to express our strong
support for the revitalization of downtown Hilo and the proposed relocation of the Hawaii
Community College to the downtown area.
With the development of new retail and professional areas outside of Hilo and the retiring
of many landmark businesses, the downtown area is having difficulty surviving. Hawaii's sluggish
economy only makes the situation worse, discouraging people from opening new establishments.
As a note of encouragement, The Kress Building has two tenants who are in their second
successful year of operation. Both are in percentage rent.
The relocation of the Hawaii Community College to downtown Hilo would give a boost to
the area by filling vacant buildings, creating foot traffic and stimulating business activity to serve
the needs of students, faculty and administrative staff.
I wholeheartedly support moving the College to downtown Hilo and ask that the County
Council do so as well. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerelyl,~~.~~~_
~_fi\
Sandra Au Fong /
Vice President for Marketing 265 Q'
Co Y4
ak File P(o.
