Dear Chairman Arakaki & Council Members:
I am a principal with the business Kuroiwa Korps, which has holdings
in Downtown Hilo. I would like to express to you my strong support
for the proposed relocation of the Hawaii Community College to
Downtown.
Beyond the obvious economic advantages to moving the Hilo
Community College into a depressed downtown setting; I would like
to forward the image of a quaint college town bustling with activity
attended by students, service stores as well as the public-at-large.
I would like to see the displacement of beggars, pan handlers,
prostitutes, druggies and drug dealers by the necessity to protect and
attend to the needs of students, retailers, customers and the senior
public.
I would like to see the voluntary renewal of old historic building
sites being turned into attractive tourist sites of public admiration.
I would like to see parks, recreational areas, historic sites and statues
blended into a background of unique small businesses and vocational
education programs where practical hands-on experience can be seen
working together.
By making our town a small business college mecca we would
capture an attractive mix of culture and economy that in one bold
stroke would save a depressed town and offer a unique setting for
our vocational oriented college.
