It is the unanimous opinion of the Boazd of Directors of Mainstreet Pahoa
Association that any and all delays in the purchase and development of the Akebono
Resource Park Property are detrimental to the welfare of business in Pahoa. We therefore
urge you to use all resources at your disposal to expedite this purchase and development.
Salvador Cliquing states that he can no longer to afford the lease payments on the
property and will, therefore, not renew that tease in October. ff the property owner
follows her previous pattern she will surely close the lot. This will leave Pahoa with but a
tiny portion of the parking required to support the businesses in that end of Pahoa
Village.
Mainstreet Pahoa has, for more than a decade, been a driving force in attempts to
purchase and develop that property for the benefit of our village. The county council
found the need sufficient to levy a bond issue to purchase and develop the Akebono
Resource Park. Councilman Safarik's vision of the development will provide for an
outdoor entertainment venue, a permanent farmers market, public restrooms and a tourist
bus stop. We believe that such development will be of major benefit to the village of
Pahoa in that it will increase retail business and provide jobs. So we repeat our plea that
you apply the leverage of the Office of the Mayor of Hawaii County to expedite the
purchase and development of the Akebono Resource Park.
