Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Members:
1 am the Property Manager of The Pacific Building and on June I"The Volcano Block building in
Downtown Hilo. 1 am expressing on behalf of the owners and myself our strong support for the
proposed relocation of the Hawaii Community College to Downtown Hilo.
My first encounter with Downtown Hilo was in the late 1960's. I came over for a Jaycee annual
" .meeting. As we were fortunate to visit Downtown Hilo, 1 was impressed with the activity, historic
buildings and warm welcome. Since then I have seen Downtown Hilo from a distance and for the last
-decade,-as a resident of Hawaii County, go through its economic cycles.
The current cycle is most distressing, as several properties have recently been renovated for
" ocetigancies a[ great expense. Their faith in [he economy of Downtown Hilo has been unrequited as
" " their Investment lies fallow awaiting thriving occupancies. It may be argued that their decisions or
" timing is just unfortunate. However, is tha[justified, NO, I do not think so. The point, as I see it, is
that Downtown Hilo is arguably the most charming and historic location in the State of Hawaii. This
"Jewel of the Pacific" is still a jewel. Alas, ajewel needing love and care in order to be fully
appreciated.
Accordingly, I repeat our strong support to bring a vibrant, youthful vitality to Downtown Hilo that
would be positive displacement of the current attitude, appearance and economy.
