The purpose of this letter is to express my strong support for prompt resolution of any unresolved Hawaiian cultural issues currently impeding progress of the Alii Parkway and, subsequently, immediate development of this desperately needed roadway improvement for West Hawaii. I am extremely concerned about the current traffic issues in West Hawaii. It is well known and understood that the development of the Alii Parkway is critical to improving the following concerns facing West Hawaii: 1) serious traffic congestion problems 2) managed growth in West Hawaii 3) safety and emergency considerations for the area 4) affordable housing (South Kona is the only possible "affordable" area and without this roadway virtually all other planned road projects in this area ' will be quite ineffective, thus creating less incentive for further smart development of this area) I understand that the Burial Council is currently trying earnestly to accomplish their task of balancing the required respect for the Hawaiian cultural issues with the needs for the community in their review of the County proposals for a Treatment Plan for the single unresolved Burial impacted by this proposed improvement. However, I respectfully suggest that this community needs an immediate resolution on any issues that stand in the way of the progress of construction on this highway. I fear that without this Alii Parkway, and the Federal funds that it currently commands, any hopes for some improvement of traffic problems in west Hawaii are doomed for years. I also believe that the vast majority of people in Kona understand that this road is key to a acceptable future for West Hawaii. I strongly urge you to show your support for the people of West Hawaii. Please support the immediate construction of the Alii Parkway.
