RESOLUTION NO. 22~ ~4
RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ACCEPTANCE OF AN AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL
DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) FOR THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, DEPARTMENT OF PARKS
AND RECREATION HONOKA°A POOL.
WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence M. O. Chun would like to donate an Automatic External
Defibrillator (AED), which he received as a door prize at the 8`h Governor's Biennial Safety and Health
Conference, to the County of Hawaii, Department of Parks and Recreation; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Chun has requested his donation be made "In Memory of Sergeant First Class
Wesley John Kealoha Batalona, US Army Retired"; and
WHEREAS, Wesley Batalona served his country with distinction and honor during his Army
cazeer as an Airborne Ranger with the ls` Battalion of the 75`h Ranger Regiment; and
WHEREAS, Wesley Batalona continued his service to his community and country as a Junior
Reserve Officer Training Corps instructor, hotel guard, and lastly as a convoy guard for Blackwater
Security Consulting; and
WHEREAS, Wesley Batalona and three other guard colleagues were killed in action under
hostile fire while protecting a convoy in Fallujah, Iraq on Mazch 31, 2004; and
WHEREAS, it is important to recognize the American Society of Safety Engineers, Hawaii
Chapter, and the Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Department for sponsoring the 8`h Governor's
Biennial Safety and Health Conference; Jim Newberry, Past President of the Hawaii Chapter of the
American Society of Safety Engineers and George Mauliola from Gaspro for their support; "Joe Aguon,
Sales Representative, and Sun Industries Inc., for donating the AED as a door prize at the conference;
Steve Brooks and David Nurse of Hawaiian Dredging for holding the AED while looking for a suitable
place to locate it; Bishop Tom Heers; Honoka`a Fire Station especially Captain Felix Asia, Captain
Michael Gahan and FF/MICT Chris Honda, and Deputy Director of Parks & Recreation Pamela Mizuno
for their instrumental roles in finding a home for the AED; and
WHEREAS, the automatic external defibrillator, with a total estimated value of $1,200, will be
used at the Honoka`a Pool; and
WHEREAS, Article XIII, Section 13-12, of the Hawaii County Charter provides that the
Council, on behalf of the County, may accept gifts or donations of personal property; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation recommends the acceptance of this
donation.
NO~V, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
IIAV6'AI`I that in accordance with Article XIII, Section 13-12, of the Hawaii County Charter, the
Council of the County of Hawaii accepts the AED.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a letter of appreciation and a copy of this resolution be
sent to Mr. Lawrence M. O. Chun, 421 C Olomana Street, Kailua, Hawaii 96734-2275, acknowledging
this generous donation.
