HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0728.000 2002-200410 I recently read in the newspaper a call to arms "for all good citizens to aid in the search for terrorists". That statement by the attorney general led me to question the mayor's resolution for the allocation of funds for the creation of a Citizens Corps Program, a law enforcement terrorism prevention program, and a state homeland security grant program. I know that allocations for these programs were passed by this Council. I was informed that over the years Mayor Kim has done an excellent job overseeing this county's Civil Defense program, and I don't doubt that this is true. But I'm here to plead with you to proceed with this program with extreme caution. This is such a grave situation, for committees of this kind may be rife with the opportunity for prejudice and abuse. Yes of course we all must be concerned about terrorism and the need for watchfulness. But a watchdog council is not something we should be promoting in Hawaii. I come to you not solely from a position of a concerned citizen but from the personal position of someone who has been made the object of mak an act of prejudice. Some claim righteousness in the name of prejudice. But in truth, it is Vigilanti-ism. What next--- the hanging tree? Where does it end? People will be afraid to socialize with to their neighbors for fear that they may have to tell lies about them in order to keep their jobs. This smacks of McCarthyism of the 1950's and the House un-American activities committee (HUAC). Peoples lives were totally ruined by the hysteria which plagued the nation. They were literally turned inside out; livelihoods cut off; families split apart; blacklisting left and right. Neighbors afraid to socialize for fear that they might have to make up a lie about them in order to please a landlord's loyalty oath they were required to sign. And what about this country's other shame, the Japanese internment camps? Are we now to question and perhaps jail innocent people who for some arbitrary reason be branded as "The Enemy"? Will children be asked to "give up their parents, as in Hitler's Germany? I have been the victim of discrimination under the pretense of security (See doc. 3). But not only security. I have been called a haole Jew far too many times. But one can discriminate on so many grounds if they so choose, and if they are convincing and articulate enough to make several people believe. We have known prejudice on the grounds of religion, age, sexual orientation, or any reason the persecutor can persuade others of their "cause in action". There is a group of vicious people in Hawaii who have made it their livelihood to abuse me in every way imaginable, and I know that some of them are out and out bigots. And in order to get others to discriminate against me who may find anti-Semitism distasteful, they make up one false story after another. Additionally, they are running a scam by telling people that they are making a movie and charging them for the privilege of learning how to "act" and to teach their children how to "act" in a sadistic manner towards me. Because of limited time here, I have submitted 5 documents and attached photos for your perusal. Please, I beg you, take the time to read them thoroughly. A quick summary is as follows: Doc 1- A complaint I filed with the Better Business Bureau concerning the most shoddy and disrespectful treatment that a business establishment could display. Date ��I had no knowledge oAbut seemed to be a topic of entertainment for some. This document was circulated. An ifilplication was made about children being upset in the storage space. I have no idea why this should be. I have never been accused of anything other than that I complained about being hurt (i.e. temporarily blinded, skin damaged). Doc 2- Letter sent to Parks and Recreation director Pat Engehard. In my addendum, please note the subsequent follow-up meetings (2) I had with the director, the last of which I submitted photos of my disfigurement; pool and shower filth_ t. the mars and scars on my body were caused by patrons of the pool with the lifeguards full permission and participation. A copy of my driver's license is included to be used as a comparison of the way I looked only one year ago. Copy of a document that was, like the storage situation, was being circulated to the masses. No one knows what the statute is and so they made something up. Two different stories came back to me. One was that I have a communicable disease; the other, again, having something to do with not being allowed to swim with children. None of this is true, however. But I have complained about being physically and emotionally hurt. Should I not complain when I am being hurt to the point of disfigurement? Doc 3 — Kress Movie theater. Discriminated against under the guise of security. Doc 4 — Hele-On bus (disrespectful and discourteous driver to the point of lunatic behavio4 and subsequent meeting with Tom Brown, TA Director. In addition, my ID was stolen and/or copied four times in the past 7 years. My credit rating was destroyed and to this day I am suffering repercussions from this situation. The prime hardship as a direct result is the elimination of having the clean, safe, affordable housing to which I am entitled. I have worked hard all my life. I had my own word and data processing business. Even an IRA. I've lived a clean, law-abiding existence. Because of these lunatics, I have nothing. I do not smoke, do drugs, or drink in any setting but the occasional socialization. And I have never, ever been directly accused of doing any harm or displaying untoward behavior toward anyone at any time. The absolute worst, most frustrating part of this for me is that members of the police department have turned a blind eye to the gutting of my car and the continuing disfigurement of me, even to the point of out-and-out harassment on the say of those who are hurting me. They seem to be going along with what is being called a set-up so that no one need n e titution. The word set-up is being used as a euphemism for a show or a play. Many ave ragged out having gone through a certain training on Kauai. Was it titled "sadism 101"? And so, members of this council, who is to serve on these councils to protect us from terrorism? By what criteria will they be chosen? Who will conduct their training? And what backgrounds and qualifications will the trainers have? Caution is one thing, but mass hysteria is an aberration. We cannot, we must not allow the disease of prejudice to overtake the hearts and minds of the people. We cannot, we must not allow anyone to succumb to this most heinous failure of humanity. You cannot, you must not allow this destruction of a good woman's reputation and physical appearance to continue. The driver (I learned he calls himself Moses) left the bus along with 3 or 4 men who were on the bus. He ended up talking animatedly with one man in particular. I was watching this from the bus, as I boarded when he pulled in. I had my letter of complaint in hand. When we arrived at the Mooheau terminal in Hilo town, I told him I would be dropping something off and returning immediately. He gave me a crooked smile, and said "Of course". I wasn't sure if he was planning on pulling out again without me, but I didn't think he'd be that stupid at a crowded terminal. I sensed something was up though. He kept giggling and talking with that guy from Banyan, and kept giving me these sidelong glances. So I stupidly handed him one of the letters and said "please don't try to make a fool of me". And "take me to the Walmart stop." I then sat down and said no more, except to the man who was giggling with the driver who said to me "he's not your personal chauffeur." At which point, I said "who asked you, and mind your own business." When I said stupidly handed him a copy of the letter, its because my purpose that morning was to deliver the letter to Mooheau and the Director of the Transit Authority, Tom Brown. I never sidestepped proper channels before, as a situation like this, a letter of complaint, is always handled solely with superiors. I'm afraid their antagonistic behavior got the better of me. He proceeded on his route up Waianuenue. Three of the four passengers departed the bus by the library stop. One little old man remained in the rear, apparently asleep. The driver suddenly stopped the bus just past the Dept. of Education building. He turned to me with a nasty smirk and said, "I'm not going any further with you on the bus." He then opened the doors, stepped out and waited for me to follow. I was dumbfounded and protested. He proceeded to call dispatch (all the while smirking as if it was all a show), and said that I was being belligerent. I believe that was the word he used. But I was not anything of the sort. I was simply stymied by his actions. No matter what he thought of my letter, his duty to the public is to driver them where they wish to go along his route, and to be courteous about it. I do not smoke, do drugs or drink to excess. I follow all the public transportation rules and regulations. As I was too upset to stand there and argue with him, I simply left the bus and called ACE Taxi to pick me up and bring me to the Transit Authority. (I utilize both the TA taxi and bus voucher programs.) When I arrived, Mr. Tom Brown, the Director of the Transit Authority, introduced himself to me and showed me into his office. Mooheau terminal personnel apparently faxed him a copy of my letter, as he had one in hand. I provided him with an originally signed copy anyway. He was polite and sympathetic and obviously shocked at the behavior of the bus driver in question. The more I related the insulting behavior perpetrated upon me, the more upset with the driver Mr. Brown became. I had mentioned to Mr. Brown that I'm the kind of person who doesn't hesitate to write or phone an accommodation to an especially courteous and helpful bus driver. Anyone may verify this with Kauai TA. Not many people go to the trouble of doing this but I know it means a lot to an employee of any service industry to have a compliment noted in his/her personnel file. He was apologetic and assured me that this display of disrespectful treatment towards me would never occur again. He promised to reimburse me the taxi voucher of that day and bus vouchers via mail. We shook hands and I proceeded to get on with the rest of my day. Subsequently, I have ridden with that driver twice since the last incident. I simply deposit my voucher; ask to be let off at a specific stop, and say thank you when I depart. No other words are exchanged between us. He does seem to sit and brood, so I guess he really got himself into trouble because of his poor behavior, and I suppose there is a black mark against him in his personnel file. It was the route that begins on Banyan Drive at 8:30 a.m. and the stop is in front of Uncle Billy's. I am a middle-aged woman on social security disability and rely on public transportation. I purchase bus coupons. I walk with a cane and live about 1 %2 miles from that bus stop. I reached the stop just as the bus pulled up. The bus driver left the bus to get something from Uncle Billy's store. He apparently does this every morning. As he was returning, I asked him if he would be kind enough to wait one minute in order to allow me to use the ladies room. He said "yes, of course". When I returned just at exactly 8:30, (according to Uncle Billy's clock) he pulled out looking at me and waved bye-bye with a grin on his face. He just sped away, just like that! What in the world was he thinking? Was he on something? I am outraged and demand an apology and insist that this bus driver be reprimanded and retrained in dealing with the public. Because of general lack of interest, bus ridership is meager. The Hele-On bus is dependent on people like me. One would think your drivers would be taught to be especially courteous. A couple of weeks ago I treated myself to a one dollar movie at in Hilo town. I am a middle aged woman whose sole income is social security disability. I also have no driveable auto, as it was vandalized beyond repair. Because of this, I do whatever shopping I can manage to carry in my backpack. I have been patronizing this theater complex for almost one year. This day in question after enjoying a movie without incident, I noticed it was still early and decided to catch a second movie. I bought a ticket for the second movie and proceeded to enter. Entirely without provocation, the manager stopped me for the second time in a month and told me that I cannot enter the theater with my backpack. The first time, I voluntarily complied in allowing him to check my backpack, albeit not without outrage at this disrespectful request. I didn't know what he was looking for, but we shook hands and that was that. At least I thought SO. This last occasion, when he stopped me after the first movie, I was livid and called the police. I waited for them outside the theater. Two officers heard my complaint. One of the officers suggested that perhaps he's being cautious since 9-11. So how come I was never stopped before now including the earlier movie? Arid how come I saw others enter with large satchel bags, backpacks, and diaper bags? Do people have any idea what can be carried in a diaper bag? The airlines know. However, this is a movie theater. At what point do we stop invading people's privacy and person under the guise of terroristic security? At my request the officers accompanied me back into the theater where we met with the manager in question. I wanted this search of the contents of my backpack in the presence of the officers. When they saw that there was nothing illegal or untoward, they asked the manager why he wanted my backpack searched. He stated that the previous week some man went berserk wielding a machete. I remarked that someone who does that usually looks like someone who would wield a machete. Where does better judgment and harassment cross over? It was left up in the air as to what might occur the next time I wish to enjoy a movie. I expected the police officers to tell the manager that, in future, unless there is probable cause to stop and search, aunty should not be harassed. But, much to my dismay, they did not. It's truly insulting for a woman of my background to be singled out in a public venue such as this. This subject of security and/or harassment brings to mind the Merry Monarch Festival and Hoike night. There were about 3000 men, women and children jammed into the tennis stadium carrying a whole lot of diaper bags and picnic baskets. No one was stopped, questioned, or searched. And it was a besutifirl evening with not one bad incident. If ever there was an opportunity for a lunatic to create havoc, that was it. I also attended the Moscow State Circus when they performed at the Hilo Civic. Not to mention the numerous basketball and baseball games played at the Hoolulu complex. At this point I half expect your lifeguards to be unprofessional and disrespectful according to their past actions. But you..... you are the director of this county's parks department!. How dare you make light of my most painful plight at the Kawamoto pool and deny my request for a hard copy of the phoned complaint. Even if you do not agree with me at least show me the courtesy of responding to my request. What an outrage that your lifeguards act so callous and disrespectful to me by allowing people to think that Icicldng,•throwing, blowing sand, dead skin, feces and fleas and other detritus matter at me in the pool and pool shower is acceptable behavior, as if it were a show. I assure you itis not a show and I am not amused! What an outrage that my skin is so irritated with layers of debris as a direct result of this injurious behavior, that I have been advised to seek a dermatologists care My eyes have been so badly injured that I have bad two emergency visits to my eye doctor with scratched corneas. I am being disfigured and emotionally distraught I also see a therapist What an outrage that because my previous complaints about the above matter was not handled with reprimand on your part to the lifeguards, this situation persists,causing me to fear the pool environment I love swimming laps and it's so beneficial to my arthritic condition. Your lack of concern for my right to have a clean, safe environment in which to swim and shower has carried over to the rest of the Hoolulu Complex and several other neighborhood venues. Many of the caretakers of the pavilions have made a show of acting as if I were persona non grata by participating in sand and flea throwing contests; and there were times the washing and drinlang water flowed brackish in color and taste. In its way, Hilo town is still a small town that thrives on gossip and innuendo. I really don't know what you and others are being told about me, but I can assure you that I have been a hard-working, tax=paying, law-abiding woman all my life. I defy anyone to legitimately End otherwise. My soul income is Social Security disability, and, therefore, must utilize free venues of exercise. I attend most of the sporting events that take place at the Hoolulu Complex (baseball, basketball, tends, etc.), as they are usually within my means and within walking distaace. It was a pleasant diversion and often a joy. it should be so for me now, but, sadly, it is not On the above-mentioned day that I called your office, the lifeguard that everyone calls Joe was encouraging a canoe club (about 15 teenagers) to speak negatively about me as if I weren't there and he let them throw sand, etc. When I complained to them, he came running over and said to the kids "pay no attentions; just keep laughing at het". And once again, I heard a reference to me as "haole Jew". I have also heard one or another member of personnel or their friends instruct people to say that I did or said something bizarre or untoward even though I was merely swimming by myself A kind of phony or lying corroboration. Each of your lifeguards has insulted me in so many ways since I began to regularly swim at the I{awamoto pool, I lost count Other patrons have noticed their unprofessionalism in that they allowed several pool goers to hurt me. Some kids were calling Fteiland "the pool boy". And your lifeguards still allow unwashed, flea -ridden swimmers to enter the pool without showering beforehand What an outrage at your lack of my well-being that I'm thinking of taking up residence in Hoolulu on weekends and holidays like the main you sheltered at another county park. Of course, it would be much more pleasant if the trees weren't being plowed down in order to make jobs for lawn doctors. Prior to this communication, I faxed a letter to the above storage facility. As I have not received the satisfaction I sought, I am notifying you of the situation and hope, with your help, it can be corrected. I am outraged and dismayed regarding the shoddy and disrespectful treatment I have received by the personnel at Hilo Self Storage. I am a middle-aged, partially disabled woman who was dependant on this storage facility as my car is defunct and I utilize the Kawamoto swimming pool across the road. My sole income is Social Security disability. The locker space I rented was within my means and a great convenience with respect to its location. The pool in requisite exercise for my condition and being able to store necessary items was one less burden for me to worry about. About four months ago, my locker unit was vandalized, and I was surprised at how this incident was taken so lightly by a r0.. , vi , as manager and her assistant. At my request, she (Marie) assured me that she would provide me with another, same - sized space as soon as one became available, or repair this one. I conducted a spot inventory, as I was upset, but nothing appeared missing. However, several bolts were removed and I was concerned about possible water damage, as well as my personal safety. But my consumer savvy was questioned unnecessarily, as I was asked \^are you sure it warn\'t like that when you rented it?\m what nonsense! As there were no other units available, and since Marie led me to believe that my locker would be carefully observed, I waited patiently for a correction. And then, about 2 months ago, I brought to her attention, some wood shavings on the floor in the locker area and that some had blown into my face and eyes. I felt certain that it was intentionally placed and blown by a man who rents a locker near mine, and who frightened me on several occasions by appearing suddenly and shouting and cursing in a drunken manner, and who also seemed to be living there. , .haring this four-month period, however, Marie struck up a friendship with me, and my periodic inquiries as to the repair/replace of the locker was met with assurances that she was still working on it . Then, on the 22nd of October, much to my horror, my locker was vandalized again. There was a white substance all over the bottom, and the sides has initials scrawled on them. And, more wood shavings on the floor. I brought Marie up to inspect the situation. The man I previously mentioned was sitting on a can of plaster compound facing hjs open locker. Much to my dismay and disbelief, she looked at him sitting there and she laughed along with him at my distress. She turned to me and said out of the blue, "I've had several complaints about you from other tenants', and something to the effect of not renewing my rental agreement. I was dumbfounded, and left for the day. Apparently, her friendship was deceptive, as well as her promise to repair/replace my locker. However, she DID RENEW the agreement on the 27th, but handed me a letter stating the above remark about complaints received and •your behavior'. When I insisted on knowing the nature of the complaints (what behavior, the nature of the complaints, who complained, and when the complaints were made), Two days later, her assistant Roy, shoved a letter in my face and said •sign here'. This was. a final latter rasci:.ding tha rental agr-scaant asking me to vacate. No further explanation was given. I would not have signed for it had I known its contents. In those several months that Marie and I chatted, sometimes over breakfast, she never mentioned any complaints about me. Not only am I greatly inconvenienced by all of this as there are no other self storage facilities in the area with reasonably priced units, but I am stymied by this disrespectful treatment. i utilized the facility in a mature manner. I came and went as my day warranted. I did not tarry, nor did I socialize there. And to add insult to injury, the expulsion was made public, as I overheard two men in the pool saying something to the effect "Did you hear about Annette? What a show. They were playing tapes when she wasn't even there of someone acting crazy and saying it was her., .s ar"iOn is 'ibelous. ,rig ? They are supposed to be professional b4ainess people. Additionally, when I began my search on the internet for the credentials of this business (BBB, DCCA, Hawaii Revenue, Storage Companies etc.) they were nowhere to be found. The next day I phoned and someone found a KCom Corp as though it was suddenly entered, Are they LICENSED and permitted To RUN OPHHATB A STORAGE FACILITY? They surely dont conduct themselves in a professional manner. They did refund the payment I had made on 10/27, but.I dont feel this is adequate compensation for the hardship, aggravation, ill mannered and illegal treatment I have suffered at the hands of these irresponsible people. I want a full refund for the entire six months I stored my belongings there, plus a written apology for sullying my good name, a copy of which they must keep on the cover of their file.
