Subject: Cliftos Veto
Aloha Council Members,
Please support Mayor Kim's wise veto of the Cliftos project.
At this time our road system can not support the traffic we have. The number of fatal accidents is rising faster in
Hawaii then anywhere else in the nation. The newest data out shows that fatal crashes in Hawaii, alcohol related,
have continued to increase with the Big Island leading the way.
People come to Kona to vacation, they stay at the resorts they need a safe highway to get to town on. Recentty a
young Japanese couple were hit in their car and the husband was killed. Leaving his bride of only a day with
multiple broken bones and a ruined life when a driver tried to get around a truck and crushed their little rental car.
We bike on that road and we die on it. Multiple members of the bike club have been hit by vehicles driving in the
shoulder as if it were an extra lane. This occurs daily and seems not to be hafted by police. When the vehicles
come over a rise and come upon a biker the results have been fatal.
I know this because my husband is a Kona physician, one who has often been unable to get to the hospital
promptly when called in an emergency because of the traffic. Norm felt that it was too high a risk to be on call at
Kona Hospital when we live right in Kona. He has stopped practicing for fear of being unable to reach a patient in
time. One less physician for Kona at a time when they were and are still critically short staffed.
Development helps us move forward bringing us the tools to grow but development without proper planning sets
us back making the island a less desirable, devoid of native life, more expensive and tragic legacy to leave to our
children.
