I don't usually write to people in government but the Clifto's issue causes me concern -
and [hope my points raise red flags with you all as well.
The Clifto's conversion to residential zoning from light industrial zone is a mistake.
• I understand development is going to take place and the area affected is as good as any
for development.
• The area is close to the airport and because of that, especially with residences being
proposed, people will soon begin complaining about airport noise. The next step is for
"us" to find a way to cut down on the noise -usually accomplished with restricted flying
times and smaller airplanes (as soon as Aloha complies with federal requirements).
• If any of you are familiar with Orange County/John Wayne airport, this scenario should
be familiar. Over a period of time, the flight requirements at John Wayne have become
quite restrictive. One of the main reasons is because of the complaints from people in
Newport Beach. The airport was there first, the people came later -just like Kona.
• I would strongly encourage you to NOT allow this conversion and leave it as light
industrial. We would not be denying the developer the opportunity to make money - or
the county to collect taxes on the development. f
• But the airport is our lifeline. It is the reason the rest of the North Kona/Kohala~-;
development is taking place. Allowing residences next to the airport is not very I~ght. ~n _ _
• Additionally, Mayor Kim's veto based on not allowing the development until the
infrastructure is in place is very wise.
