RE: RESOLUTION 8O 97; Supporting the Preservation of the
Ala Kahakai and National Trails Day on June 7, 1997
Honorable Members of the Council:
This letter is in support of the referenced resolution. Through my four year association
with the non-profit group E Mau Na Ala Hele, I have come to realize the historical,
cultural, and recreational value of the many old trails on the island. Walking on the
smooth round stones of an ancient trail along our splendid shoreline is both exciting and
humbling.
I also recognize the concerns of native Hawaiians for the protection of trails as cultural
resources, and of landowners over whose property the trails cross. It is important that
we continue to work together on the protection and management of the trails.
This resolution supports the preservation of the Ala Kahakai and a planned National
Trails Day Event which will bring wide-spread recognition of the significance of the island
trails and related cultural, geologic, and scenic sights.
Please vote in favor of Resolution 80 97.
