Box 384762
Waikoloa, HI 96738
September 8, 2004
Chairman James Y. Arakaki E-Mail: jarakakiC~interpai.net
Hawaii County Council FAX: 961-8912
25 Aupuni Street
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
RE: CLIFTO'S BILL #178/ OVERRIDE THE MAYOR'S VETO
Aloha Chairman Arakaki,
I was born in Hawaii and have lived on the Big Island in Waikoloa for the past 14 years with my wife
and family. I have never before written in to share my opinion with the Council but the ongoing
lambasting, untruths in the media and now the Mayor's timely(election time) veto of the Clifto's project
has gotten me off the couch. Please, please, please vote to override this senseless Veto!
This development is going to save my family and I a lot of heartache and grief. We currently must
drive into Kona at the very least twice a week, mostly to shop. As we all know it is no longer zip in
and out of Kona, the afternoon traffic is horrendous. When the shopping center, shops and restaurants
are built and open at O'oma, we won't have to drive into Kona anymore, unless we choose to. I can't
believe some people don't get this simple logic. It doesn't matter if there is a two lane highway or a
four lane highway, this development will act like a magnet and divert traffic off the road to Kona.
Without a doubt, this development will help with the traffic situation, not hinder it and it will save my
family and me a lot of time and effort, not to mention the thousands of other families.
I also surf down at Pine Trees when time permits. I, like everyone else must drive across the O'oma
shoreline road to get there. The O'oma owners have done a spectacular job of cleaning up and
maintaining the beach in a very high fashion. To think that they have offered this shoreline to be
placed as a permanent easement for all to enjoy is most comforting for myself and our future
generations. I understand they also are paying for the drawings/plans of the highway and offering
double the required amount ofaffordable housing'. With all due respect sir, this is a no-brainer! It is a
gift horse staring us in the eye. Are we going to grasp this opportunity or walk away and see what
happens next year as the traffic continues to get worse?
Please don't let those loud groups who want no development at all affect your vote. They are noisy
and get attention, but don't make much sense. We need all the Councff's support and votes to override

this Veto. You can help us to make this a better Hawaii, a better home, a better way of life.

Mahalo and Aloha, Comm. No. •~SV
Ref. To: Preagi~
Mark Wilson Ref.
