Re: Another Opinion Regarding the Proposed 'Clifto' Development Project
Dear Joe and Fred:
It was a pleasure dining with you Saturday night at the benefit for our County's fire fighters. I just wanted to drop you
and the other county councilmen a brief note regarding my family's opinion of the proposed 'Clifto' Development.
Unfortunately, I suspect you won't hear too much of this opinion in your Council meeting in Kona this week.
My family resides in a small subdivision in the Kona 'Palisades' area. Our home overlooks the proposed development
and we currently have almost daily trips into Kailua Kona for shopping and services. While we, as all Kona residents,
are concerned about the overall traffic situation in Kona, we support the Clifto development project. We believe the
solution to the traffic problem is more roads (and better utilization of the existing roads). Prohibiting or postponing
development does nothing to alleviate the current traffic problem and worsens the already bad business environment.
The Mayor's veto of the Council's approval of the project is an admission that he is not prepared to fight for a better
Kona transportation infrastructure with those in Honolulu who hold the State's purse strings and the vocal minority
who oppose every development in West Hawaii.
From my family's perspective, the ideal situation is to develop retail services in North Kona, which will eliminate a
significant number of our trips into town, in parallel with the new roads Kona so desperately needs. We believe the
current traffic rhetoric is just another fear tactic from the vocal minority of anti-development activists. The West
Hawaii community needs more roads, but we also need the jobs, services and county tax revenue that development
projects like 'Clifto's' generates.
It is my family's hope that the Council and the Mayor will work to ensure West Hawaii receives the infrastructure
necessary to support the projects that will enhance the quality of life for both Kona and the entire county. I feel the
current traffic problem is a good example of what happens when the vocal opinion of a few stop the improvements
needed by all. We need you to stand up and do what we all know is right. I can only imagine how tough it must be
listening to the rhetoric of some of our activists. I am writing this to reinforce your knowledge that a majority exists
that needs you to continue to build and improve our community in spit of the outcries of the very vocal minority. You
have a tough job. My wife and I thank you for all your hard work.
