RE: Bill 348, Amending Ordinance No.04-59
I he North Hilo Community Council gives fall support for the amended ordinance to
provide funding for the Laupahoehoe Emergency Access Road.
Laupahoehoe Beach Park or "Laupahoehoe Point' as it is referred to by those who live
here. is very popular to local residents as they look to this area as the "piko" of our
community. Many visitors to our island find this beautiful site to be a nice picnic or
camping sport on their visit around our island.
At any given time there can be as little as the six to seven families who live there. to as
main as 300 to 600 people enjoy ing individual family picnics or large gatherings or
luaus. Having an alternative emergency access road to and from the area would be of
great benelit to the community. and others, in the event of an emergency occurring on the
Hamakua side access road to Laupahoehoe Point. It could also serve as an alternative
route should there by a closure of the Hawaii Belt Highway between Laupahoehoe and
Waipunalei due to landslides or major traffic accidents, which has been the case on many
occasions.
We would sincerely appreciate your favorable consideration of Bill 348. It would he of
great benefit to a large population of this, our island home, I lawaii Island.
