The enclosed map may help to pinpoint our area, which is adjacent to some of the 4,400 acres of former Hamakua Sugar Company cane land now owned by the County of Hawaii. As land owners we are very concerned about damage to the County road and our property, due the unmanaged runoff. The former sugar land soil conservation contour terraces and runoff water diversion channels to the existing gulches have not been maintained by the present owner, which is the County of Hawaii. We are very concerned that if the portion of the 4,400 acres directly above the Manienie Road community were to become a part of the timber industry, that this would have a devastating effect on the County road and our property. We have had this road ruined by the havesting of sugar during rainy periods (the County road was repaired later by the Hamakua Sugar Company), and fear that this area above our homes, if covered by trees will cause unthinkable erosion and runoff problems, far worse than those we experienced with the sugar plantation. The worst part is that now the contour ditches have mostly silted up due to lack of maintenance, and now we are left with a road that is washing away again. The erosion is forming gullies, creeping closer and closer to our properties, and we are all very worried and we have had no response to road maintenance doing repair work. We are a very concerned group of residents of this road and area. We would like very much for this area to be pasture. Stanley and David Dias have tried to lease it for pasture for cattle, and are ready, willing, and able to do the contouring ditching and anxious to maintain it up to proper standards. If anything, this could be a buffer zone between our County road and any possible forest project, ComU. Dia 311 N10 No. /p,41kr M. Toi- P4. Concerning the 77.4 acre piece, 4 3 12 6, directly above our properties and the County road Manienie Road: could you please spare this area above our property from being put into timber as part of the 4,400 acres, and please let it be pasture. As there are too many families affected if our road is already in such poor condition and our property at risk of turning into gullies. As many of us commute to work and school, our safety is at risk. Please help us from letting this happen again! We are hoping that you will accept our solution.
