HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 257 Draft 02 2002-2004 COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION NO. 257 t)4 (Draft 2) A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING NOVEMBER 2004 AS ALTERNATIVE DISPUTE RESOLUTION MONTH IN THE STATE OF HAWAII WHEREAS, Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes provide people with opportunities for successful resolution of their conflicts and a path toward finding solutions that may not be available in a court room or other litigious setting; and WHEREAS, originating from the 1996 Citizens' Justice Conference, a consortium of dispute resolution professionals and supporters from both the public and private sectors continue to come together to enhance public awareness of ADR and encourage active support of the use ofparty-driven dispute resolution methods; and WHEREAS, ADR processes provide an opportunity for parties to save costs and time, preserve relationships, enhance privacy, and give parties greater control over the process of resolving their disputes; and WHEREAS, the consortium adopted the theme "ADR It Works!" to expand public awareness of ADR during ADR Month, and thereafter; and WHEREAS, honorary Co-Chairpersons, Frank DeLima, an entertainer whose work celebrates the diversity of Hawaii, and Olena Rubin, Miss Hawaii 2004 and former peer mediator at Kapaa High School, exemplify by their good work the notion that collaborative processes can foster positive continuing relationships; and WHEREAS, both Chairpersons are eager to encourage our community to celebrate collaborative processes that include ADR in the resolution of disputes; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI`[ that it recognizes November as "Altemative Dispute Resolution Month" and supports the efforts of the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution in helping mediate complex litigation, and administrative and judicial disputes that affect the public interest or that involve agencies of state and local governments. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it acknowledge, congratulate and extend appreciation to Frank DeLima, Olena Rubin, and the consortium for their outstanding effort in educating the public about ADR and promoting peaceful problem solving among Hawai`i's people. BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii is instructed to transmit copies of this resolution to the Honorable Ronald T. Y. Moon, Chief Justice of the Hawaii Supreme Court, Ms. Elizabeth Kent, Director of the Center for Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Ms. Geraldine Hasegawa, East Hawaii Representative to the Hawaii State Bar Association.
