RE: INFORMATIONAL MEETING: THE FOREST INDUSTRY
Please be informed that on July 1, 1997 the Committee on Human Services and Economic
Development will be holding an informational meeting regarding the forest industry. The
meeting is scheduled to run from 1:00 p.m. unti12:30 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is to
provide an opportunity for the Council to heaz three short presentations on tree farming in
Hawaii County. The emergence and growth of the forest industry on our island makes it
important for us to understand the practices employed by this industry.
As you aze well aware, Hamakua Timber is currently fazming thousands of acres of eucalyptus
trees in the Hamakua area. I have asked representatives from Hamakua Timber to attend our
meeting and give a presentation on general forestry practices as well as the specific practices
they currently employ in Hamakua. I have also asked management consultant Tommy Crab and
Bishop Estate Senior Land Manager Peter Simmons to provide their perspective and knowledge
on the tree farming industry.
Mr. Crab was the vice president and manager of the BioEnergy Development Corporation, a
subsidiazy of C. Brewer Company. In that capacity, he spent his last 15 yeazs prior to retirement
as manager in charge of researching short rotation eucalyptus tree fazming. Mr. Simmons has
been the Senior Land Manager of the Forestry and Natural Resources Department of the Bishop
Estate for the past six years. He is also a charter member, former president and current Boazd of
Directors'' member of the Hawaii Forest Industry Association.
It is my hope that this meeting will provide useful information to the Council. If you have any
suggestions, comments or questions, please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.
