Date? = We, II Alpha volunteer firefighters of Na'alehu and community members thank you for letting us address this finance committee. You have in your possession over 1000 signatures of the district of Kau concerned citizens who would benefit in having a fire station built in Na'alehu as we are support to both Pahala and Ocean View fire departments and we are midway between them. We also protect the communities surrounding Na'alehu until Pahala and Ocean View firefighters can reach the area. My name is Marge Gray and I am a member of 11-alpha volunteer fire fighters of Na'alehu. You may not be aware but our fire truck sits outside, under a tree in a Na'alehu citizens yard. We are also aware that two paramedic trucks and one brush truck in Na'alehu are in the same predicament of being exposed to the elements. Although the paramedics and we are separate entities, we have a common goal, which is to service the area between Pahala and Ocean View in rescue and firefighting. Here are some reasons for the need for a fire station for the volunteers and the regulars of Na' alehu. 1 Indoor maintenance area for vehicles and equipment so we are better prepared to protect our community. 2. Protection from vandals and the elements 3. Housing and office for the permanent staff 4. Educational Meeting place for volunteers, permanent staff, and community members. I am here to discuss how it is possible to actually save money by building a fire station in Na'alehu now rather than later. For every year that we have to wait, we lose $21,600, 00 not counting future inflation. That is the rent being paid on a house for the paramedic living quarters. However, that does nothing to house their apparatuses. If this money was applied to a fire station now, we could have a $750,000.00 asset paid for in 35 years without another cent coming from the budget. Just think how much sooner we could start realizing the savings if the council encumbered the funds now and started right away to build this much needed fire station. This is very simplistic view but you probably can figure some way to utilize the money towards our future fire station. We are also aware that there is an 8-acre parcel owned by the county, centrally located to maximize Homeowner insurance savings for the greater number of people. That means that we do not have to search and buy land for the fire station. As we have stated in our letter to Chief Oliviera, it would be beneficial for the volunteers and regulars to share one building, which is another savings to the county. As I have stated, the county can save money by building a fire station now in Naalehu on county property. Besides saving money from the rented house, we will also save money on vehicle repairs. Thank you. My name is Del Gray, and I am a member of 1 I- Alpha Volunteer Fire Fighters of Na'alehu. You have heard about money and equipment repairs but you have not heard about our most valuable asset, people. In order to protect our most valuable asset, the firefighters and paramedics need reliable equipment. In order to have reliable equipment, we need an indoor place to protect what we have, which is a volunteer fire truck, 2 paramedic vehicles, and a brush truck. Our paramedics rent an older house in Na'alehu with their apparatus sitting in an alleyway exposed to the weather. As was noted in the newspaper article, found in your folder, we have and need the paramedics to stay in Na'alehu since our community is composed of many retirees, and their numbers are growing substantially. Ocean View now has one paramedic unit but is too far away for fast response to our community. Pahala, which is further away, has their unit and a hospital; so, our paramedics are needed in the Na'alehu area to protect our growing community. Because of this, we started a petition to see how many people would respond to the idea of a fire station being built in the Na'alehu area. People were hesitant when we asked if they would like to sign our petition until we told them what the petition was about. The response was then overwhelming. Our goal was to reach 600 signatures but we reached over one thousand signatures in a very short time. We are confident that the numbers would have been much higher if we had started earlier. The people we spoke to could not understand why we do not have a fire station already since it had been appropriated in 1997/98. In addition, quite a few people thanked the volunteers for starting the petition. Again, I say, people are our most valuable asset. With this in mind, we need to know what we can do to assist with the funding of a fire station for the volunteer and regular fire fighters, and our paramedic so we can protect our assets.
